Regional Integration, Trade and Sustainable Competitiveness

FERDI is actively engaged in promoting regional integration and international trade in developing countries, in close collaboration with regional and community institutions. It stands out through its contributions to both theoretical and technical discussions aimed at supporting the actions of these institutions.

FERDI’s research work is carried out in close partnership with the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC), the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), and other African regional institutions.

Objectives

 ↪ Analyze sustainable competitiveness and the ability of African countries to integrate into the global economy.

 ↪ Support the analytical work of the WAEMU and CEMAC Commissions.

 ↪ Assess the impact of trade-related measures on developing countries, particularly in relation to environmental issues. 

Latest Achievements

↪ Publication of the book La compétitivité hors prix de l’UEMOA : mesure et évaluation comparative (Price-Excluding Competitiveness in WAEMU: Measurement and Comparative Assessment), by the Agence française de développement. Author: Patrick Plane (CERDI – UCA, CNRS, IRD, FERDI).

↪ In 2024, FERDI submitted to WAEMU the first reports on taxation (tax gaps, tax capacity, taxation and the environment), rural mobile connectivity and its impact on sector development, agricultural risks and insurance in WAEMU countries, and the potential structuring of a fund for private enterprises in the agriculture, agro-industry, and livestock sectors.

↪ Development of sustainable competitiveness indicators for WAEMU and CEMAC countries.

↪ Support for the launch of the Business Climate Observatory in Central Africa.
