Energy and Digital Transition to Sustainable Development

Evaluating innovative solutions for energy access and promoting better governance of natural resources within the geopolitical context of the energy transition.

In all its programmes, FERDI integrates environmental issues, especially those related to climate. This particular programme showcases FERDI's work with a specific focus on the energy transition.

From understanding the links between trade and climate policies to assessing the impact of mini-grids on development and mobilising finance for climate resilience, FERDI is actively engaged in initiatives crucial for a sustainable future. By launching a chair dedicated to natural resource management, FERDI is promoting policy dialogue and cutting-edge research for more informed governance.

Objectives

↪  To highlight the urgent need to help African countries not only adapt to climate change but also mitigate the carbon footprint of their growth.

↪  To highlight the physical vulnerabity of countries to climate change

↪  To evaluate the impact of mini-grids on rural electrification in Africa and advocate for public/private cooperation in the development of mini-grids.

↪  To promote better governance of natural resources and raise awareness of the geopolitical issues arising from their use in the energy transition.

Latest Achievements

↪ The article "Global Exposure to Climate Change at a Subnational Jurisdiction Level" is published in World Development Sustainability. In this article, the authors Goujon M., Santoni O., and Wagner L. assess the exposure of territories to the main consequences of climate change, considering both the intensity and the level of physical exposure to the principal climate risks. This article is based on data and calculations from the indicator of physical vulnerability to climate change.

↪ The article "The landscape of CO2 emissions across Africa: A comparative perspective" was published in The World Economy. This article by Jaime de Melo and Jean-Marc Solleder highlights the increase in intensity of the carbon footprint of production in Africa and highlights the urgent need to reduce this footprint. It follows and concludes a series of articles published in 2022 on the subject.

↪ The RCT method, an innovative method for assessing the impact of mini-grids on access to electricity and development is producing its first results.

↪ The Natural Resources Management Chair was created.
