Banque de France–FERDI Partnership

Under their sponsorship agreement, FERDI and the Banque de France conduct research, promote scientific exchange, support doctoral research and disseminate knowledge.

The partnership aims to strengthen the analysis of macroeconomic, monetary and financial policies in developing economies. It also supports work on critical minerals and on the economic consequences of external shocks.

In 2025, it notably supported:

  • two scientific workshops bringing together researchers from the Banque de France and FERDI;
  • doctoral research on the effects of aid, climate-related and economic shocks, and employment in Africa;
  • the publication and dissemination of research on monetary policy and the supply of critical minerals;
  • a contribution to the Annual Report on Africa–France Monetary Cooperation.

The Role of the Financial Sector in Tackling Climate Change in Africa

Online, 3–5 November 2025

From 3 to 5 November 2025, the Banque de France, FERDI and the French Development Agency (AFD) organised an international online conference on the role of the financial sector in tackling climate change in Africa.

Building on an initial conference held in 2021, the event examined how financial actors — banks, insurance companies, investment funds, credit rating agencies, development banks and central banks — can help mobilise the finance required for climate change mitigation and adaptation across the continent.

The conference comprised three thematic webinars:

  • 3 November: the role and impact of private financial intermediaries in climate finance in Africa;
  • 4 November: the contribution of public development banks to mobilising and allocating climate finance;
  • 5 November: the role of central banks and banking supervisors in addressing climate-related risks and safeguarding financial stability.

The discussions identified the main challenges and opportunities involved in financing a just and inclusive climate transition in Africa. They also led to recommendations aimed at strengthening the financial sector’s engagement in this area.
