The Role of the Financial Sector in Tackling Climate Change in Africa

From 3 to 5 November 2025, the Banque de France, FERDI and the French Development Agency (AFD) organised an international online conference on the role of the financial sector in tackling climate change in Africa.
Building on an initial conference held in 2021, the event examined how financial actors — banks, insurance companies, investment funds, credit rating agencies, development banks and central banks — can help mobilise the finance required for climate change mitigation and adaptation across the continent.

The discussions identified the main challenges and opportunities involved in financing a just and inclusive climate transition in Africa. They also led to recommendations aimed at strengthening the financial sector’s engagement in this area.
