L'impact économique des langues

The international symposium “Cultural dimension of development and regional integration in West Africa: Challenges and perspectives” organized by IRES-RDEC (Lomé), INSAAC (Abidjan) and LAMIDEV (Cotonou), was held on June 12 and 13 in Lome, Togo. The purpose of the symposium was to reflect upon the link between culture and economic development in the WAEMU region. More specifically, the goal of the conference was to understand through which channels culture can contribute to development within the union, to identify the constraints and cultural challenges that hinder integration in the subregion and to encourage reflection on the role that culture can play in sustainable development:
After the opening session in the presence of Togo’s Minister of Communication, Culture, Sport and Civic Education, Guy Madjé Lorenzo, presentations and debates between researchers, experts and cultural professionals were organized in three sessions:
In the framework of the first panel session, Audrey-Anne de Ubeda, research assistant at Ferdi, made a presentation on the impact of language on economic performance. This session was an opportunity to present researches on francophonie undertaken by Ferdi as part of the Culture and Development program (lien: http://www.ferdi.fr/en/node/406) , and more particularly the research results of Céline Carrère and Maria Masood, published in the book L’impact économique des langues, 2016. The symposium ended with a joint working session during which speakers and participants made recommendations to the WAEMU Commission.
