After Addis : Financing for development must address vulnerabilities

The first of three major meetings in this pivotal year for development, the United Nations Third International Conference on Financing for Development took place from 13-16 July in Addis Ababa, and was attended by more than 10,000 people.
The challenge was to establish a draft common framework for concrete, effective implementation of the new development agenda, the goals for which will be adopted in September at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Addressing vulnerability through development finance
to make development sustainable

The side event has dealed with the importance in addressing vulnerabilities to make sustainable the development. It was drawn on the collective book just published by Ferdi, entitled "Financing Sustainable Development: Addressing Vulnerabilities". It examines how development finance can help to ensure the sustainability of development, taking into account the various types of vulnerability – economic, social and climatic – faced by developing countries.
This event, led by Patrick Guillaumont, brought together the Ivorian Minister of Finance Nialé Kaba, two UN Under-Secretary-Generals Michel Sidibé (UNAIDS, author) and Gyan Acharya (UN-OHRLLS), Pierre Jacquet (GDN, author), Tandin Wangmo (Gross National Happiness Commission and representative for the Bhutanese Minister of Finance) and Barry Herman (author).
Several well-known figures spoke from the floor during the event, including Frédéric Bontems (French Minister of Foreign Affairs), Yves Guicquero (French Development Agency – AFD), Aka Aouele (Vice-President of the Côte d’Ivoire National Assembly), and Jean-Marc Châtaigner (Deputy Executive Director of the French Research Institute for Development – IRD).

Ce Side Event traitait de l'importance de s’attaquer à la vulnérabilité pour rendre le développement durable. Les discussions se sont appuyées sur l'ouvrage collectif que la Ferdi vient de publier, intitulé « Financement du développement durable: traiter les vulnérabilités ». Cet ouvrage examine comment le financement du développement peut aider à assurer la durabilité du développement, en tenant compte des différents types de vulnérabilité – économique, sociale et climatique – auxquels sont confrontés les pays en développement.
Animé par Patrick Guillaumont, l'événement a réuni la Ministre des Finances de Côte d’Ivoire Niale Kaba, deux Secrétaires généraux adjoints des Nations unies Michel Sidibé (Onusida, auteur) et Gyan Acharya (OHRLLS), Pierre Jacquet (GDN, auteur), Tandin Wangmo (Commission du Bonheur National Brut et représentante du Ministre des Finances du Bhoutan), et Barry Herman (auteur). Plusieurs personnalités se sont à cette occasion exprimées depuis la salle dont Frédéric Bontems (Ministère français des Affaires étrangères), Yves Guicquero (Agence française de développement – AFD), Aka Aouele (Vice-Président de l’Assemblée nationale de Côte d’Ivoire), et Jean-Marc Châtaigner (Directeur général délégué de l’Institut de recherche pour le développement – IRD).
