    Biographie

    George Mavrotas is a Professor at the Institute of Development Policy, University of Antwerp.

    A development economist with over 30 years of experience, he is widely recognized for his work on the nexus between macroeconomics and development finance, particularly on aid effectiveness, domestic resource mobilization, financial sector development, and poverty reduction.

    His research interests also cover food security and nutrition, agricultural policy, youth employment in agriculture, commodity markets and natural resources, human capital development (especially education and training economics), international migration, and urbanization.

    Prior to joining the University of Antwerp, he held senior positions at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), including Director of IFPRI’s Nigeria program, and at the Global Development Network (GDN) in New Delhi. He also served as Senior Research Fellow at UNU-WIDER (Helsinki) and taught at the Universities of Oxford and Manchester. He has been a visiting professor at institutions including the University of Helsinki, CERDI (France), and Peking University.

    He is currently a Senior Fellow at Ferdi (France) and has held honorary positions at UNU-CRIS, the World Bank, the University of the South Pacific, and the Oxford Centre for the Analysis of Resource Rich Economies (OxCarre).

    He has authored or co-authored over 140 publications, including numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and 10 books. Notable titles include Foreign Aid for Development (OUP, 2010), Security and Development (Edward Elgar, 2011), and Challenges of Urbanization (Routledge, 2021).

    He holds a D.Phil. in Economics and an MSc in Development Economics (with distinction) from the University of Oxford, an MA in Economics and Econometrics from the University of London, and a BSc in Economics from the University of Athens.
