Submarine cable infrastructure and trade in Africa

This note provides an overview of selected studies on the trade impact of submarine cable (SMC) infrastructure, with a focus on African economies. We show that, though SMCs’ laying has promoted trade and export basket upgrading, there are winners and losers in the process (Section 2). We also discuss potential mechanisms explaining how connectivity has spurred export sophistication in the region and propose an agenda for future research (Section 3).
