Presentation of the session

The legitimacy of the LDC category has been strengthened by the recent emphasis on vulnerability as one of the 3 criteria for identifying countries in the category. At a time when an in-depth review of the UN system and the structure of development financing is underway, it is important that the place of the LDCs be clearly defined. This raises a number of questions, which will be examined:

↪ Given its unique and special status, should the group of LDCs be given a place in the governance bodies for international development financing?

↪ What is the actual and potential impact of financial support measures for LDCs?

↪ How can we ensure that a sufficient share of global concessional resources is channeled to the LDCs? Should access to and allocation of these resources be based solely on membership of the category or on the criteria on which it is based (per capita income, low human capital, structural vulnerability)?

↪ Should the way in which the identification criteria are combined be re-examined in order to have a synthetic criterion to give greater clarity and visibility to the category?
