Demographics

FERDI benefits from a huge work of reconstruction of annual data series covering the period 1950 upto the present, for under-5 mortality rate and fertility in Sub-Saharan countries, by Michel Garenne, research director at IRD.

The quality of demographic data, particularly on mortality and fertility, is plagued by statistical uncertainty. Time series are also usually incomplete.

FERDI has the data from a reconstruction of annual data series covering the period 1950 up to the present, for under-5 mortality rate and fertility in Sub-Saharan countries by Michel Garenne, research director at IRD. These series are based on the DHS survey and are undoubtedly the most reliable available at present. The data cover more than 30 African countries from 1950 until the present day and are regularly updated.
