AFRITAC South Seminar on Mirror Data Analysis in Customs Administration

September 17, 2024 > September 20, 2024, Maurice

From September 17 to 20, 2024, AFRITAC South organized a regional seminar in Mauritius on the crucial and timely topic of Mirror Data Analysis in Customs Administration.

The seminar was led by Anne-Marie Geourjon and Bertrand Laporte, both recognized experts in customs data analysis, along with Gilles Montagnat-Rentier from the FAD, who has extensive experience in supporting customs development in Africa. Stephen Mendes, the Resident Customs Administration Adviser at AFRITAC South, also contributed his expertise.

Objectifs du séminaire

This practical seminar introduced tools and techniques that enable customs authorities to compare information about what was imported with data showing what was exported to that country - giving assurance that the right values and tariff codes are used by importers and identifying fraud.

This technique helps customs make a tangible difference – by using the product of mirror data analysis to enhance risk management to secure revenue, facilitate trade and increase overall effectiveness in customs operations.

Key Topics Covered

The seminar explored several key areas, including:

  • The principles and significance of mirror data analysis for customs administration.
  •  Methods to identify gaps in external trade data.
  • Approaches to be used to identify the most probable causes of a data gap.
  • Practical applications of mirror data analysis results.
  • Organizational strategies to  ensure an effective mirror data analysis function in Customs.
