From 2019 to 2024, Dr. Padayachy served as Minister of Finance, Economic Planning, and Development of the Republic of Mauritius. Prior to that, he was the First Vice-Governor of the Bank of Mauritius from 2017 to 2019 and Chairman of the Financial Services Commission from 2018 to 2019.
With extensive experience in the private sector, Dr. Padayachy served as Chief Economist of the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he led its Economic Analysis and Industry Division from 2010 to 2017.
Throughout his career, Dr. Padayachy has been committed to research and policymaking that promote social justice as an essential condition for economic development in Mauritius and, more broadly, in the sub-Saharan region.
He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, France. His doctoral thesis, titled Poverty Measurement in Mauritius, is a comprehensive study of poverty in the country.
Dr. Padayachy also holds two Master's degrees: one in Public Economics from the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, France, and another in Industrial Economics from the University of Franche-Comté, France.
